Mold Surface Testing: Swab, Tape Lift, and Bulk Samples
When you can see mold growing on a surface, a mold surface test helps determine exactly what type of mold it is and whether it’s active. Mold & Mildew Solutions provides professional surface sampling for mold using swab, tape lift, or bulk testing methods, all analyzed by an AIHA-accredited laboratory for accurate results.
Swab Testing for Mold
A swab sample is ideal when mold is growing on uneven, porous, or damp materials such as wood, drywall, or insulation. Our inspector uses a sterile swab to collect material from the affected area and sends it to the lab for mold identification and confirmation of active growth. Swab testing can detect both live and non-viable spores on the surface.
Tape Lift Testing for Mold
A tape lift sample is commonly used for smoother surfaces such as painted walls, tile, HVAC vents, or furniture. The clear adhesive tape is pressed onto the suspected area to lift mold spores and particles. This test helps determine if discoloration is due to mold, soot, dust, or another substance. Tape lift testing is quick, minimally invasive, and provides fast visual identification under the microscope.
Bulk Sampling for Mold
For materials that can be safely removed, we offer bulk sample testing, where a piece of building material—such as carpet, baseboard, or drywall—is sent to the lab. This test provides definitive results showing whether mold growth has penetrated beneath the surface or within layers of the material.
Is Mold Testing Always Necessary?
In many cases, visible mold can be identified and remediated without laboratory testing. However, surface samples can be extremely valuable when:
- Different mold colors or textures appear in the same area
- The cause or type of growth is uncertain
- Legal documentation or insurance verification is needed
- Health symptoms are present and a lab-confirmed report is required
If extensive contamination or indoor air quality concerns exist, our certified inspectors may also recommend air sampling to evaluate airborne spore concentrations and determine whether mold is spreading through the HVAC system or other areas of your home.
Accredited Laboratory Analysis
All surface, air, and bulk samples are sent to an AIHA-accredited microbiology laboratory for analysis by qualified scientists. Lab results will identify each mold genus and indicate the presence of common indoor molds such as Aspergillus, Penicillium, Cladosporium, and Stachybotrys (black mold). Results are typically available within a few business days and include a certified lab report reviewed by our inspector.
Protect Your Home and Health
Surface mold testing provides the knowledge you need to make informed decisions about remediation and prevention. Whether you are buying a home, investigating a musty odor, or responding to water damage, our testing gives you peace of mind and professional documentation.
